Malaysian Authorities Detain 1,871 People in Anti-Gambling Operation
In a two-week operation from September 22 to October 5, Malaysian authorities arrested 1,871 individuals suspected of involvement in online gambling and unlicensed lottery activities. The operation led to 1,785 raids across the country. Law enforcement seized MYR 680,000 (approximately US$144,000) related to illegal lottery activities, along with cash, computer equipment, and mobile phones valued at MYR 513,000, believed to have been used for online gambling.
The detainees, comprising 1,599 men and 312 women aged between 20 and 60, are under investigation for their alleged involvement in public lottery assistance and the purchase of lottery tickets, potentially in violation of Malaysia's Common Gaming Houses Act of 1953.
As of October 5, 382 investigation reports pertaining to online gambling and illegal lottery have led to court charges, while 1,362 investigation reports are still under review. An additional 43 investigation reports have been categorized as requiring no further action.
It's worth noting that licensed lottery operations are allowed in Malaysia, and Resorts World Genting, located near Kuala Lumpur and managed by Genting Malaysia Bhd, is authorized to offer casino games.
