Parents of Jack Ritchie, who tragically lost his life to gambling addiction, to receive royal honors

Liz and Charles Ritchie, parents of Jack, who tragically took his own life in 2017 after battling a gambling addiction, are set to be honored with royal accolades at Windsor Castle this Wednesday.

Jack Ritchie, who was just 24 years old, succumbed to his gambling addiction while still in school. His parents, Liz and Charles Ritchie, will both be awarded MBEs during the investiture ceremony for their remarkable initiative - the establishment of the charity "Gambling with Lives" in 2018.

Hailing from Sheffield, the couple has steadfastly argued that gambling-related suicides are a direct consequence of addictive gambling products and the industry's "predatory" marketing tactics.

Liz Ritchie shared, "We never anticipated being in this position, but we humbly accept these honors as a tribute to all the families who stand with us in our mission to alert others about the perils of gambling. Most importantly, these awards symbolize the acknowledgment of those, like our son Jack, who are no longer with us."

Charles Ritchie added, "Thanks to the tireless advocacy of families supported by Gambling with Lives, significant government reforms were announced in April. These awards are dedicated to all the bereaved families and their lost loved ones."

Among those joining the ceremony at Windsor Castle are Kate Garraway and Grayson Perry.

Kate Garraway, recognized with an MBE in the New Year Honors for her contributions to broadcasting, journalism, and charity, expressed her feelings, saying, "I actually feel very humbled by it all, not sure why, because I'm absolutely delighted and incredibly honored."

She added, "But there's a part of you that thinks, 'Me?' and it all feels a bit surreal."

Notably, Grayson Perry is set to receive a knighthood at the investiture for his remarkable contributions to the arts.

The 63-year-old artist, writer, and broadcaster, celebrated for his tapestries, ceramics, and boundary-pushing art, was bestowed with a Knight Bachelor title for his services to the arts in the New Year Honors list.

Regarding his upcoming knighthood, Sir Grayson Perry remarked, "I have a deep sense of the language of attire; I am quite an expert in that regard. There is a certain line, and I wouldn't choose to dress as a clown," ensuring his outfit wouldn't overshadow the other honorees on the day.

Wednesday's ceremony will also see MBEs awarded to professional footballers Andrew Robertson and Jennifer Beattie for their significant contributions to association football, as well as Robertson's commendable work with charity and youth.

Premier League champion Robertson, 29, founded AR26, a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable young people with their mental and physical well-being in 2020.

Additionally, former Real Madrid and Tottenham footballer Gareth Bale will receive an MBE.

Jack's situation is really sad. It shows how serious gambling addiction is, and we really need to pay attention to it. It's good that Jack's parents can talk about what happened. It helps people see how big this problem is and shows that there are ways to help. We all need to understand how serious this is and help out anyone dealing with it.
